AVMA Reports FAA Audits of Veterinary Shipping Practices
The American Veterinary Medical Association (“AVMA”) reports that the FAA has recently audited certain veterinary clinics to confirm proper training and practices for shipping of lab specimens by air. Apparently, the external appearance of some shipped packages and leaking of some specimens, which created potential for human and environmental exposure, resulted in the audits by the FAA and/or the US Department of Transportation (“DOT”).
The AVMA has provided an outline of required training and packaging for shipping lab specimens. See: http://www.avma.org/issues/pack_ship_lab_specimens.asp
Also, the DOT has provided guidance. See: http://www.phmsa.dot.gov/staticfiles/PHMSA/DownloadableFiles/Files/Transporting_Infectious_Substances_brochure.pdf

It’s sad that the government has to step in based on the actions of the few.
